De Arctic Challenge Tour  is een autosport evenement voor iedereen die affiniteit heeft met autorijden, sneeuw en kou. Het is beslist geen rally. Het komt niet aan op snelheid, maar op behendigheid, goed navigeren en anticiperen. Daarom is deelname aan de Arctic Challenge ook voor iedereen mogelijk en heb je geen rally licentie nodig.

Dus bij de Arctic Challenge Tour gaat het vooral om het navigeren, het uitzoeken van de slimste route, teambuilding en verstandig rijden. De Arctic Challenge Tour is een uitdaging voor een equipe van twee personen waarbij je geheel Scandinavië doorkruist en extreme omstandigheden kunt tegenkomen. Snelheid mag dan wel geen criterium zijn, de afstanden van de etappes zijn soms dusdanig lang dat dag en nacht doorgereden wordt en er dus aanspraak wordt gedaan op jouw doorzettingsvermogen. Vaak onder omstandigheden met veel sneeuw, zeer gladde wegen en temperaturen van ver onder nul (tot 40 graden is mogelijk). Het mag duidelijk zijn dat ook jouw auto op dergelijke omstandigheden moet zijn voorbereid. Als team zorg jij zelf voor het deelnemende voertuig en bepaal jij zelf jouw uitrusting. Neem je sneeuwkettingen mee of spijkerbanden? Rijd jij mee op diesel of benzine?

Kortom

Verwacht van de Arctic Challenge Tour geen vakantiereis waarbij veel ruimte en tijd is vrijgemaakt voor het bezoeken van bezienswaardigheden. In zes dagen tijd wordt namelijk circa 7.000 km afgelegd naar een bestemming voorbij de Noordpoolcirkel. Voor een groot deel bestaat de Tour uit rijden over sneeuw en ijs en kun je in heel barre omstandigheden terechtkomen. Er is wel een rustdag, maar die dag kunnen alle teams deelnemen aan een winteraktiviteit en kan er nog wel een klassementsproef zijn. De Arctic Challenge Tour omvat een aantal etappes. Door slim te navigeren moet de meest ideale route worden gevonden met in achtneming van de wettelijke verkeersregels. Daarnaast zullen er een aantal klassementsproeven zijn die mede de eindstand van elke etappe en uiteindelijk het eindklassement zullen aangeven.

Vooraf is bij de deelnemers niet bekend welke route gereden gaat worden. De organisatie bepaalt de hoeveelheid en lengtes van de etappes. Kort voor de start krijgt iedere equipe een eerste checkpoint opgegeven. Elke etappe bestaat uit een aantal checkpoints. Aan de hand van deze checkpoints bepaal jij zelf de te rijden route. De checkpoints worden door de zogeheten backoffice met de teams gecommuniceerd. De checkpoints kun je als deelnemer vervolgens terugvinden op wegenkaarten en/of invoeren in een navigatie systeem of laptop met routeplanner. Vervolgens bereken je de kortste of snelste route naar het checkpoint.

The Arctic Challenge Tour 2009 is a car sport event for everybody who is attracted to driving a car, snow and cold. It is definitely not a rally and it is not about speed, but about dexterity, navigating skills and anticipating. Therefore participation in the Arctic Challenge is a possibility for everybody and a rally licence is not needed.

The Drive
The Arctic Challenge Tour is mainly about navigating, finding the best route, teambuilding and sensible driving. The Arctic Challenge Tour is a challenge for a team of two people. You will travel throughout Scandinavia and may meet with extreme circumstances. Though speed is not one of the criteria, the distances of some of the stages are so long that you’ll  have to drive day and night, often while it is snowing heavily, on extremely slippery roads with temperatures far below zero (minus 40 degrees is possible). This demands great perseverance on your side. It’s obvious that your car needs to be prepared for these circumstances. As a team you’ll have to take care of your own vehicle and you’ll determine your own gear. Will you take snow chains or nail tyres? Do you use diesel oil or petrol?

In short:
When participating in the Arctic Challenge, do not expect a holiday-trip with a lot of time for sightseeing. In six days approximately 7000 kilometres will have to be covered to get to a destination beyond the Arctic Circle. The tour will for the largest part consist of driving through snow and ice while you may meet with inclement circumstances. There is one day of rest, but on that day all the teams can participate in a winter activity and there may be a ranking test. The Arctic Challenge Tour consists of a number of stages. You have to try to find the ideal route through smart navigating, while observing the traffic rules. Apart from this there will be ranking tests which will define the position of each stage and finally the outcome of the ranking in the end. Participants will not know the route of the Challenge. Shortly before starting the Challenge each team will be informed about the first checkpoint. Each stage has a few checkpoints. By means of these checkpoints you can determine the route you want to follow. The checkpoints will be made known to the teams by the so cold BACKOFFICE. As a participant you can then find the checkpoints on a road map and/or insert into a navigation system or laptop with route planner. Then you calculate the shortest or fastest route to the checkpoint.

Speed
The Arctic Challenge Tour is not a speed contest, it is a challenge. You need dexterity, good navigating skills and you have to be able to anticipate. The participants are obliged to stick to the speed limit of the country they’re in at that moment. The Tour obviously is a competition, but the element of competition lies in finding the ideal route and trying to travel a stage in a time that comes near the time set by the organisation. Of course the local maximum speed limit will be taken into account when setting the time for a stage. The organisation will check for offences of the speed limit. In case of gross or repeated offences a team will be disqualified for that particular stage and for the final ranking. Speeding, moreover, is useless, as you have to try to approach the time set by the organisation. The route and the speed of a team will be checked via a trace and track system and equipment for this will be installed in every car. In the BackOffice people can then follow every team closely. The home front, those interested and other participants can also follow the achievements of the teams live on the internet. The BackOffice will take action when a team gets into trouble.

Date of the event
The Arctic Challenge Tour 2009 will take place from the 17th till the 24th of January 2009. The starting point will be on the Roemaat Transport site in Lichtenvoorde and the finish will be on the site of main sponsor Vesting Finance in Hilversum.
